Being the pastor of a congregation that is almost exclusively under 30 in a university town, this concerns I would have about people marrying too young, but again… I was challenged. Â Perhaps extended adolescence through the mid-twenties as many social theorists are suggesting isn’t the best idea… Thoughts?

1The “maturity” thing is sure big. I think too many people go into marriage with self-seeking reasons and naturally that causes a lot of problems. Marriage has it’s own challenges, but also joys and sure gives a lot of ways to highlight my faults.
Historically, generations ago probably married younger and had lower divorce rates — so waiting or avoiding marriage and making divorce easy hasn’t really helped.

2I think it depends on the couple. Was the catalyst for this post the pair of articles in the Atlantic? (One extols the virtues of marrying late, the other of marrying early).
There’s a great section in Ronald Rolheiser’s “Holy Longing” where he talks about the way The Lord uses parenthood (stewarding our kids towards physical and emotional maturity) to bring about spiritual maturity in us as parents. Essentially talking about the role of the child in helping to purge parents of selfishness and pride. Marriage can have the same function.
I know few couples who are perfectly ready and mature when they marry (no matter what their age). It seems the factor more predictive of success is the extent to which they have people (community, mentors, disciplers) speaking into the young couple’s life and walking with them as they grow together and navigate marriage’s inevitable bumps in the road.
